MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Macon-Bibb County Recreation Department is hosting a free water safety and swim lesson program for children at the South Bibb Recreation Center.
The Safety Around Water program is being offered in partnership with State Rep. Tangie Herring and the YMCA of Metro Atlanta.
The program will provide free lessons to 40 Macon-Bibb County children ages 6 to 12 from Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31.
Sessions will be held daily from 9 to 11 a.m. at the South Bibb Recreation Center, located at 7035 Houston Road.
What children will learn
According to a news release, the YMCA Safety Around Water program teaches children water safety skills while helping them become more comfortable and confident in and around the water.
Participants will learn basic swimming techniques, how to respond in emergency situations, and other life-saving skills designed to reduce the risk of drowning.
“Learning to swim and understanding water safety are life-saving skills, and we’re proud to help connect our children with a program that can make a lasting difference,” Recreation Director Robert Walker said.
Registration required
Space is limited to 40 participants, and advance registration is required.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to stay safe around water,” Herring said. “These free lessons can equip young people with skills that may one day save their lives.”
The program is presented through a partnership among Amazon, Georgia Power, Macon-Bibb County Government, Herring, Y Not Us, and the YMCA of Metro Atlanta.
