(NBC)- President Donald Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as international leaders work to advance efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The meeting comes after Ukraine released new video showing drone strikes targeting military sites inside Russia, following a wave of Russian attacks on Kyiv that Ukrainian officials say killed at least 22 people Monday.
Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy follows separate phone calls over the weekend with both the Ukrainian president and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said he believes both sides want the war to end and expressed optimism that progress can be made.
Ukraine is expected to continue pressing allies for additional air defense systems and military aid after repeated Russian bombardments highlighted the country’s dwindling missile defenses. Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned that delays in receiving military assistance have weakened Ukraine’s ability to defend against attacks.
The conflict with Iran is also expected to factor into discussions, with questions about whether U.S. military resources are being stretched by multiple international crises. The White House has said the U.S. military has the resources it needs.
Trump is also expected to continue urging European allies to increase defense spending as leaders discuss ongoing support for Ukraine.
