Washington County deputies arrest man during suspected prison drop

According to the Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on private property near the rear perimeter of Washington State Prison.

DAVISBORO, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says it arrested a Florida man on June 22, after a suspected prison drop.

According to the Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on private property near the rear perimeter of Washington State Prison.

They say K-9 tracking and evidence at the scene led deputies toward the prison grounds, where they saw a man carrying suspected contraband was observed.

Deputies say the suspect then ran from them through a heavily wooded area, but he was later taken into custody near Burden Street.

The Sheriff’s Office says following the arrest, K-9 Rebel found the contraband the suspect threw out during the pursuit.

The suspect was identified as James Lamar Stewart of Jacksonville, Florida. He’s charged with two counts Possession of Firearm or knife during the commission of a crime, Items Prohibited by Inmates, three counts Items Prohibited by Inmates, Trading with Inmates, Possession of Marijuana with intent to Distribute and two counts of Obstruction.

They say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming.
