Officer, Bystander Killed In Montreal Shooting; Suspect Dead

(NBC)- A police officer and a bystander were killed after a gunman opened fire on officers responding to a call in Montreal, authorities said.

Montreal police said officers were dispatched after reports of shots fired and a gun protruding from the window of a hotel.

When officers arrived, investigators say the suspect opened fire.

Graphic witness video captured the chaotic scene, showing an officer being shot and another taking cover as gunfire erupted. Additional footage appeared to show a bystander collapsing near the scene.

Authorities said the suspect, armed with a rifle and wearing camouflage clothing, advanced toward responding officers before being shot and killed.

Police confirmed that one officer and one civilian died in the attack.

Witness Heidi Doctor said her two children were getting haircuts nearby when the shooting occurred.

“Nauseous,” Doctor said. “Knowing that my son literally was on his scooter on that street with no protection other than a helmet, and was minutes from when the shootings took place. I just haven’t processed it yet.”

Police have not released the names of the victims or the suspect.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine a motive.

The deadly shooting has left Canada’s second-largest city mourning the loss of an officer and an innocent bystander.
