Multiple Injured In Stabbing Near Penn Station In New York City

(CNN)- Several people were injured in a stabbing near Penn Station in New York City on Sunday evening.

The New York City Fire Department responded to reports of multiple people stabbed around 7 p.m. near West 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue, the location of Penn Station. Witnesses described a large emergency response at the scene.

“What I did see was somebody going away in a stretcher with a lot of bandaging around the head, so it looked a fairly traumatic incident,” one witness said.

Authorities said one victim suffered serious injuries, while at least four others sustained minor to moderate injuries. All of the victims are expected to survive.

“We didn’t know what was happening until there was four police cars and four ambulances came and all that,” another witness said.

Amtrak released a statement saying its police department responded to the incident and that “the suspect has been apprehended and an investigation is underway.” The attack left some commuters shaken.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted a message on social media wishing the victims a speedy recovery and said his administration is working with Amtrak as the investigation continues. Despite the incident, some witnesses said they still feel safe in the city.

“I feel safe in New York. I don’t feel as if there’s any risk,” one witness said. “I’ve been in other countries where I’ve been more worried, but here in New York it seems fairly safe.”

Authorities have not released additional details about the suspect or what may have led to the stabbing.
