(CNN)- A deadly train derailment in Iowa is under investigation after authorities say a train collided with a semi-truck Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened around 12:37 p.m. near Highway 21, just north of Old Highway 6 in Poweshiek County.

Investigators say the semi-truck entered a railroad crossing and was struck by an oncoming train. The driver of the truck was killed in the collision, while a passenger was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

The impact caused numerous rail cars to derail. Authorities estimated that more than 20 cars left the tracks.

Despite the scale of the derailment, officials said there were no immediate concerns involving hazardous materials.

“Thankfully there was no hazardous materials involved with this, which is a huge thing for us,” Poweshiek County Sheriff Matt Maschmann said. “Especially with trains, you never know what they’re hauling.”

Officials reported that none of the people aboard the train suffered injuries beyond minor cuts and bruises.

The derailment caused significant damage to the railroad tracks, and authorities expect repairs to take time. Sheriff Maschmann said the affected highway will remain closed for at least several days while crews work to clear the scene and restore rail service.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
