KEEPING THE FAITH: Mulberry Methodist and Macon Outreach Continue a Tradition of Feeding the Homeless

Every weekday morning at Mulberry Methodist Church the line is out the door.

“In a year’s time we will serve close to 50,000 meals every year,” says Pastor Tommy Mason. Hundreds of Macon’s homeless and needy fill the cafeteria at the church, for one of the few constants in their lives: A warm meal from volunteers.

“There’s a great many here that are greatly talented, and just hit a bump in the road or need just a little help to get to the next step in their life,” says Director of Macon Outreach Johnny Hathcock.

It’s an initiative started 41 years ago by Macon Outreach along with Mulberry Methodist, as a way to emulate the teachings of Jesus, whose life’s work was defined by service.

“We try to help our folks realize that it’s an honor for us to serve them, because our Lord told us to reach out,” says Hathcock.

“It’s just part of what it means to be a disciple or follower of Jesus, not simply following from a distance but drawing close and becoming more like Christ,” Mason adds.

With the 2,400 calorie meals offered, those blessed by this service leave with full stomachs and full hearts.
