12 hospitalized after major crash shuts down I-75 in Monroe County

UPDATE: The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said in an update Thursday afternoon that the left lane of I-75 southbound near mile marker 180 was back open but urged drivers to continue using caution in the area due to the volume of traffic.

MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –A multi-vehicle crash involving several tractor-trailers, passenger vehicles and a travel bus sent 12 people to area hospitals Thursday morning on Interstate 75 southbound in Monroe County, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Monroe County Dispatch received a call around 11:42 a.m. regarding multiple crashes near mile marker 180, just before the rest area.
Authorities said the crashes involved four tractor-trailer trucks, 11 passenger vehicles and one travel bus.
At this time, 12 people have been transported to area hospitals. Three individuals were reported to have life-threatening injuries.
The crash scene remains active, and there is currently no estimated time for reopening that portion of the interstate.
Motorists are urged to use caution and avoid the area if possible.
The sheriff’s office said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
