(NBC)- Thousands of travelers across the country are scrambling to make new plans after the sudden collapse of Spirit Airlines over the weekend.

The discount airline abruptly shut down operations Saturday and canceled all flights, becoming the first major U.S. airline in 25 years to go out of business because of financial problems.

Passengers described confusion and frustration as trips were suddenly disrupted.

“In the middle of the ocean and found out that all our flights were canceled,” traveler Nikki Young said.

Young said her luggage was also lost in the confusion after it was routed through Spirit before the airline ceased operations.

“Our luggage was prioritized to go to Spirit. Spirit doesn’t know where it is, the cruise line doesn’t know where it is,” she explained.

The collapse has stranded passengers nationwide, with many now rushing to rebook flights through other carriers.

In response, several airlines have introduced special “rescue fares” for stranded Spirit customers, offering capped ticket prices — many around $200 — to help travelers get home.

The shutdown is also having a major impact on employees.

Former flight attendant William Roman said workers are now facing an uncertain future.

“The hardest part is what are the flight attendants going to do and the other employees because there’s just not enough work for everybody here,” Roman said.

On Monday, former Spirit employees gathered outside the company’s now-closed headquarters in Florida to support one another and reflect on the airline’s collapse.

Former flight attendant Semone Westmaas called the moment bittersweet.

“It was that job that I loved. There was no job that compared,” she said.

Industry analysts say the shutdown highlights growing financial pressures facing low-cost carriers, especially amid rising fuel prices and economic uncertainty tied to global conflicts.
