Mount de Sales welcomes alumnus Mike Walton as head basketball coach
The Catholic private school has announced alumnus Mike Walton as its new head boys basketball coach for the 2026–27 season.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A familiar face is returning to lead the basketball program at Mount de Sales Academy in Macon.
The hire comes during a milestone year, as the academy celebrates the 150th anniversary of its founding.
Walton, a graduate of Mount de Sales, went on to play Division I basketball at Rice University, where he was a four-year letterman. After completing his collegiate career, he earned a degree in kinesiology and began building experience across both high school and college programs.
His coaching background includes serving as head basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Wesleyan, as well as a role in Division I athletics as director of men’s basketball operations at South Carolina State.
School leaders say Walton’s familiarity with the Mount de Sales community, combined with his experience at the collegiate level, positions him to continue developing student-athletes and strengthening the program’s reputation.
Walton takes over a program that has seen steady progress in recent years, with expectations to build on that momentum while guiding players both on the court and in the classroom.
The addition of Walton marks a full-circle moment for the academy, as one of its former athletes returns to lead the next generation during a historic chapter for the school.
