National Peace Week Comes To Hardest Hit Neighborhoods Of Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Flanked by city hall, Macon mayor Robert Reichert stood next to city council members, and the founder of the national organization known as The Peace Keepers, to promote what is known as National Peace Week. 

The group talked about the importance of people joining forces to help police deter crime. Peace Keepers founder, Dennis Muhammad, explained how smaller cities like Macon, are taking over as being the number one crime spots in the country. His theory is to use peaceful measures in neighborhoods to solve that issue, and help keep crime out.

Peace Keeper volunteers stand out in their bright orange shirts with the words ‘Present Peace’ written on the front. Volunteers help police by going into a neighborhood, stand in a group, in their orange shirts, and promote messages of peace.

“Any time you see 50 to 785 men and women in orange shirts…they can go into the worst corners and be standing for one hour. I don’t think no drug dealer is going to sell no drugs that time. I don’t think there’s going to be no crime and violence,” Muhammad says.

Peace Keepers is a national organization, with a total of 15 cities participating in Peace Week.
