(NBC)- A gunman opened fire at a popular archaeological site in Mexico, killing one person and injuring several others.

The shooting happened at Teotihuacan, a major tourist destination near Mexico City.

Witnesses captured video of gunfire ringing out as visitors ran for safety. Some people were seen fleeing down the pyramids as shots were fired.

Footage also showed a man pacing at the top of a pyramid, appearing to hold a gun.

Investigators say the gunman fired multiple times, killing a Canadian woman. Six other people were injured.

Authorities said the suspect later turned the gun on himself.

Officials said a firearm, a bladed weapon, and live cartridges were recovered at the scene.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the attack “deeply pains us” and promised a thorough investigation.

Authorities said the site has been secured following the incident.

Teotihuacan is one of Mexico’s most visited landmarks, attracting more than a million visitors each year.
