(NBC)- A deadly plane crash in Wesley Chapel has left a community shaken after a small aircraft went down in a residential backyard.

Christina Galbiati says she watched the aircraft descend from the sky moments before impact.

“It was loud, it sounded mechanical… like a gurgle,” she said. “Everything seemed fine, but then I saw it curve and then just go straight down.”

Galbiati rushed to alert her husband and ran outside, hoping to help. But by the time they reached the scene, there was little they could do. The crash left the aircraft destroyed in a neighbor’s backyard, with the pilot killed on impact.

The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating what went wrong after the Cessna departed a nearby flight center located about 25 miles north of Tampa. Residents say the area has seen similar incidents before, including a deadly crash in 2020.

What stands out to witnesses, however, is what they believe were the pilot’s final actions.

Galbiati says she saw the aircraft change direction just before impact—possibly to avoid hitting nearby homes.

“I saw a heroic moment… a split-second decision,” she said. “He knew he was coming in fast and needed to do something… so he purposely turned and went straight down.”

Officials have not confirmed that assessment, but neighbors say the pilot’s actions may have prevented an even greater tragedy.
