JONES, County (41NBC/WMGT) – Students at Turner Woods Elementary School planted a food forest on campus Wednesday, taking part in a hands-on learning experience focused on food security and sustainability.

President and CEO of Shaome Cooperative Chelsea McClain said the project teaches students how communities can grow food where they live.

She said her mission is to fight food insecurity in Georgia.

“When we have food forest everywhere, and this is our vision. We want to be in every school; we want them in city parks, businesses, places of worship, people’s yards. When people can walk down the street and pick their own food…then we’re food secure,” McClain said.

McClain said many people don’t think they are food secure because they can go to a grocery store. But she explained that those products can be scarce at times, so teaching students how to plant will benefit them in the long run.
