BS Report: Super Bowl Preview
The Super Bowl is set with the Patriots and the Seahawks Patriots beating the Broncos on Sunday in snowy Denver and also, of course, the Seahawks at home beating the Rams. The Patriots are quite a story. There’s no Bill Belichick or Tom Brady on this team. It’s Mike Vrabel as the head coach there. Former player. And also Drake Maye their second year quarterback. They have been a pretty good combination. And then with the Seahawks what a story that is with Sam Darnold being a castoff quarterback. And the head coach of the Seahawks has a tie to the state of Georgia. He graduated from Centennial High School and Roswell played football and baseball there, then went to University of Georgia as a finance major.
He was the Terry School of Business in Athens, but he wanted to coach, so he got a job as assistant coach there in Athens at Cedar Shows High School. Then in 2010, he became a G. A graduate assistant at the University of Georgia for Mark Richt. He was there for four years. Then he went to the Baltimore Ravens as an assistant coach, was there through 2020, and then he went from John Harbaugh to Jim Harbaugh as he joined Michigan as their defensive coordinator for 2021. Did pretty well there. And then John Harbaugh came calling and said, I want you to come back to the Ravens. And he was a defensive coordinator for Baltimore in 2022 and 2023, before being hired as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. The unbelievable thing about this is that both Mike McDonald, who grew up in Atlanta, the Atlanta area, and Mike Vrabel, the two coaches, and the Super Bowl, were both interviewed by the Atlanta Falcons two years ago, but instead they decided to hire Raheem Morris.
You figure it out for me. All right. Another interesting story to keep an eye on this week is the Falcons general manager search. Now they’re having a press conference on Tuesday with their new head coach Kevin Stefanski. But I don’t think they’re going to have the GM ready because there are several candidates still there. And one candidate with ties to middle Georgia. James Lyford is originally from Marshall Ville, Macon County, played at Westfield High School, then went on to play football at Georgia Tech from 2005 through 2008. Well, he wanted to get into football and he has been part of the Patriots for nine years. And then since 2018, he has been with the Houston Texans, now their assistant general manager. And from what I’ve been told, he’s in the final cut for the general manager, competition for the Atlanta Falcons. So wouldn’t that be cool to have someone from Middle Georgia from Marshall ville as the potential GM for the Falcons to work with new head coach Kevin Stefanski and of course, the president of football, Matt Ryan. So we’ll keep an eye on that.
But pretty cool, I think to have someone with ties to middle Georgia and the state to, have someone there and possibly helping run the Falcons, that would be cool. Falcons may have learned their lesson after passing on Mike McDonald, an Atlanta kid, a couple of years ago. Maybe they’ll go with the Georgia kid this time around, and James Leiper will keep an eye on that for sure.
