Trump receives symbolic Nobel Peace Prize gift from Venezuelan leader
Closing out an eventful week on the world stage, President Trump is now in possession of a Nobel Peace Prize.

(NBC)- Closing out an eventful week on the world stage, President Trump is now in possession of a Nobel Peace Prize — presented to him by Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize winner herself, said the gesture was meant to recognize what she called the president’s commitment to Venezuela’s freedom.
“As a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom,” Machado said.
She told Fox News the gift was made on behalf of the Venezuelan people, adding, “Because he deserves it.”
President Trump described the moment as a “wonderful gesture of mutual respect.” However, the Nobel Institute has made clear the award cannot officially be transferred, making the gesture symbolic.
Machado’s visit comes as questions remain about her role in Venezuela’s future leadership following the U.S. ouster of authoritarian leader Nicolás Maduro. President Trump has said he does not believe Machado has the respect needed to lead the country.
Some Florida Republican lawmakers disagree.
“She’s the legitimate leader of the opposition in Venezuela. She proved it, she earned it,” said Rep. Maria Salazar.
President Trump has said the United States would run Venezuela until a safe transition can be made. He also praised interim President and Maduro loyalist Delcy Rodríguez.
“She’s somebody that we’ve worked with very well,” Trump said.
The president cited Rodríguez’s support for a U.S. sale of Venezuelan oil this week.
Meanwhile, U.S. forces seized another oil tanker linked to Venezuela, which the Department of Homeland Security says was illegally defying sanctions.
All of this comes as President Trump closely monitors rising tensions in Iran. He noted the Iranian regime backed off planned executions of protesters after he warned the U.S. could take action.
U.S.-based human rights activists say more than 2,600 people have died in Iran’s crackdown on anti-government protesters. The White House says all options remain on the table.
