Retired WMGT Chief Engineer Joe Spears Dies

Joe Spears 20031127Joe Spears was the chief engineer at Channel 41 for twenty years, from 1969 until he retired in 1989.

He was the first engineer of this television station and one of the most knowledgeable transmitter engineers around.  Those who worked with him say he was a down to earth person who could fix just about anything (and he did).

The engineers at the station are among the hardest working people in the business,  working around the clock to make sure our signal is on the air and reaching your home.

And that’s what Joe did: worked make sure you could see our station, day after day.

Joe Spears died Saturday in Dothan, Alabama at the age of 89.

Prior to moving to Macon, Joe put WTVY-TV in Dothan, Alabama on the air.  He also worked as that station’s first engineer from 1955-1969.
