Hollywood Minute: Rian Johnson teases new thriller as ‘Knives Out’ sequel rolls out; John Prine tribute film debuts

Rian Johnson reveals details about his next film while promoting Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

(CNN)- As “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” rolls out in limited release ahead of its December 12th Netflix debut, writer-director Rian Johnson is already deep into his next project. Johnson tells Empire Magazine his upcoming film will echo 1970s paranoid thrillers with “a light sci-fi element.” It won’t be part of the Knives Out franchise — but one cast member from the new movie already wants in.

Glenn Close, who appears in Wake Up Dead Man, says she’d “love to work with him” on the mysterious new project, adding that the script is something Johnson has envisioned “for a very long time.”

Meanwhile, the legacy of late songwriting great John Prine is taking center stage. “You Got Gold: A Celebration of John Prine” brings the star-studded 2022 tribute at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium to theaters. The documentary includes performances and personal stories from artists honoring Prine’s lasting impact. Fans can find showtimes at yougotgoldmovie.com.

Hollywood is also marking two milestone birthdays this weekend: four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris turns 75, and actor-writer-director Ben Stiller celebrates his 60th.
