UAB football player arrested after allegedly stabbing two teammates before game

(NBC)- A University of Alabama at Birmingham football player is facing serious charges after police say he stabbed two of his teammates just hours before Saturday’s home game against the University of South Florida.
Twenty-year-old Daniel Mincey, a second-year lineman from Pompano Beach, Florida, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. The university says the incident happened early Saturday morning inside the football operations building.
Officials have not released the names of the victims or shared what may have led to the violence. Both players were hospitalized but are reported to be in stable condition.
Interim Head Coach Alex Mortensen addressed the incident after the game.
“More than anything, I’m grateful that those two players are in stable condition, and we will make sure they have the support they need,” he said.
Mortensen added that the team ultimately decided to move forward with the game, in part because it was Senior Night. However, several players chose to sit out — a decision the coach says he fully supports. UAB went on to lose 48–18.
ESPN commentators called it “a rough day all around for folks at UAB” during their broadcast.
Mincey, who previously played for the University of Kentucky before joining UAB, remains in custody. The university says counseling services are being made available to players as the investigation continues.
