2012 Fundraising Campaign Kicks-off for Macon Area Habitat for Humanity

Today, The Macon Area Habitat for Humanity kicked off its annual campaign to raise money. 2012’s theme is Change for Every Dollar.

The hope is to raise $285,000 to help at least 9 families this year. 6 families will get new homes in the Lynmore Estates Neighborhood, and 3 will get their current home renovated.

According to campaign chairman, Dan Forrester, Habitat for Humanity has already raised 25% of the money.

On Thursday, the Macon Area Habitat for Humanity also presented two new homeowners keys.

Sharhonda Ivey was one of them. She says she is very grateful, “It’s something I can call mine. It’s mine. I’m the first person who ever stepped foot in this house.”

Ivey will live in the house on Irving Avenue with her 3 boys. Tomika Holliday will also live in her new house on the same street with her son.

“I could cry. There’s no words to describe…I mean all the adjectives in the world couldn’t put into words what’s going on inside me body right now,” says Holliday.

Ivey says her favorite part of her new house is the extra space, “My favorite thing about the house is the bathrooms. I have my bathroom and the boys have their bathrooms. I have the girly one and they have the boy one,” laughs Ivey.

Holliday says she enjoys the comfort of knowing her home is a permanent place to stay.
“There will be no more worries about will we have a place to live,” says Holliday.

The 2012 Annual Priceless Gifts Campaign runs through early April.
