MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- A Macon dentist’s office is helping kids protect their smiles and support the troops through its annual Halloween Candy Buyback program.

Macon Smiles started the program 17 years ago under Dr. Shaw. The goal is to collect leftover Halloween candy from kids and reduce the amount of sugar that can lead to cavities.

The candy collected is sent to Operation Shoebox, which creates care packages for military members serving overseas.

“So when we started the Halloween Candy Buyback 17 years ago, Dr. Shaw felt it was important to get kids involved in showing support for the military while helping promote a healthier home and hopefully prevent cavities,” said Dr. Katie Garvin, a dentist at Macon Smiles.

This year, the office has already collected 18 pounds of candy. Staff hope to top last year’s total of 110 pounds by reaching 150 pounds before the week ends.

Children who bring in candy can also write thank-you cards to include in the care packages.

The Halloween Candy Buyback at Macon Smiles runs daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Thursday.
