(CNN) – New York Attorney General Letitia James — who famously won a civil fraud case against former President Donald Trump — is now facing felony charges herself.
Trump has long accused James of pursuing him for political reasons, once calling her “a total stone-cold crook.” James, meanwhile, has dismissed his claims, saying, “His only goal is political retribution at any cost.”
The indictment charges James with bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. Prosecutors allege she obtained favorable mortgage terms by misrepresenting a property as her secondary residence — then renting it out instead of living there.
Republican strategist David Urban commented, “You live by the sword; you die by the sword. There is no small crime.” But others, like legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin, say a conviction is unlikely, noting that a former Justice Department prosecutor had previously investigated the same matter and found insufficient evidence to move forward.
That prosecutor reportedly lost his job after refusing Trump’s push to charge James. The indictment bears no signatures from career DOJ attorneys — only that of Trump’s former personal lawyer.
As Toobin put it, “Here you have a demanded prosecution — one that career prosecutors thought was unworthy.”
