Macon-Bibb Hispanic festival moves forward despite political climate
Despite a tense political climate, organizers of the Macon-Bibb Hispanic Festival have decided the celebration will go on as planned this year.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Despite a tense political climate, organizers of the Macon-Bibb Hispanic Festival have decided the celebration will go on as planned this year.
Edna Adams, one of the festival’s organizers, explained that after discussions with the committee and vendors, the decision was to move forward.
“We need to celebrate now more than ever,” Adams said. She spoke about the importance of sharing Hispanic culture and pride with the community, especially during these times.
Vendors also rely on the festival.
“They ultimately count on this revenue from this festival,” Evelin Mendoza, co-owner of Guitarras Mexican Grill, said. She added that being part of the event is also about showing pride and inviting everyone to experience Hispanic customs, food, history and dance.
Security remains a priority. Adams said the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office will be at the festival to ensure a safe environment for all attendees. While some may feel uneasy about attending in the current atmosphere, both Adams and Mendoza encourage everyone to come together in celebration and support and unity.
Mendoza’s message is simple.
“Breathe,” Mendoza said. “Relax, enjoy the food, enjoy the dancing, enjoy the music, and most importantly, just have fun for the day.”
Adams echoed the call for unity and kindness.
“This is a time for us to watch out for one another and just be kind to one another,” she said. “I think that’s the biggest thing, and I think that Macon already prides itself on that.”
Adams also said individuals and families should do what feels right for them given their circumstances.
Although Adams is uncertain about overall attendance this year, she hopes support from the non-Hispanic community will be stronger than ever.
“We’re hoping that maybe the non-Hispanic community comes out and balances out that attendance,” she said.
The Macon-Bibb Hispanic Festival is set for October 18 at Cherry Street Plaza from 1 to 7 p.m.
