West Laurens’ Ty Cummings Breaks State Rushing Record

DEXTER, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – Not only were there stars shining in Macon, but the boys from the west side of Laurens County were tearing it up on the gridiron in Dexter.

The Week Seven Game of the Week at “The Shu” did not disappoint Friday night as West Laurens senior back Ty Cummings set a new GHSA single-game rushing record with 615 yards, breaking the previous mark of 608 held by Coffee.

Running behind an incredible offensive line, Cummings also accounted for eight touchdowns, five of which came in the first half and three of which happened on just his first four carries.

Cummings also became the leading rusher and touchdown scorer in West Laurens program history in the Raiders’ 70-55 win to improve to 6-0 for the first time since 1973.

Cummings credited God and his offensive line for his success.

“First off, Cason Pollack — he’s the quarterback, he’s not supposed to be blocking. But if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have scored most of those touchdowns. I can’t do anything but thank God and my offensive line. Without them, nothing I do would be possible. We practice all week, we game plan on Friday, and they make it happen. I’m happy about it, but it’s just another day, another dollar. We’re going to get back to work next week,” Cummings said.

The Raiders take a bye week this week before heading to the Academy of Richmond County Friday, October 10, for another Region 4-AAA matchup.
