Central Georgia Cancer Care Foundation donates to Piedmont Macon wellness programs

A donation from the Central Georgia Cancer Care Foundation will help Piedmont Macon provide free holistic wellness programs for cancer patients and families.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Cancer Wellness Programs at Piedmont Macon Medical Center Oncology Services received a donation from the Central Georgia Cancer Care Foundation to support free holistic wellness programs for cancer patients and their families.

Piedmont Macon Medical Center and Central Georgia Cancer Care jointly serve nearly 500 patients each month, providing not only medical care but also emotional support. The donated funds are helping to sustain and grow programs such as grief support groups, nutrition counseling and creative arts healing classes.

“We don’t want to just treat with medicine only,” Kimberly Lewis, Oncology Manager at Piedmont Macon, said. “We want to treat their whole body so that physically, emotionally, spiritually, we can help the patients.”

Lewis added that the support group at Piedmont Macon has already been a tremendous help to patients, and the new funding will allow for further expansion.

“We’ll be able to expand on a ‘Stronger Together’ support group so that we can make it more often and really get that program to be a more robust program,” she said.

Dona Schaeffer, a breast cancer survivor celebrating one year cancer-free, participates in the art classes supported by the program.

“It is good to be with the people that have survived, just like I do, and it’s inspiring and encouraging,” she said. “Some of us weren’t sure we ever would do that well again.”
