Veterans Softball Improves To 16 2 With Split Region Matchup Against Lee County

KATHLEEN, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – The Veterans Lady Hawks, led by head coach Jeff Sans, entered Tuesday’s doubleheader against region opponent Lee County with a 15-1 record and a No. 1 national and state ranking by MaxPreps.

In Game 1, the Lady Hawks found themselves in trouble early, giving up five runs in the first five innings. A double play to end the top of the fifth gave Veterans the momentum it needed, sparking a five-run inning capped by a two-run homer to center field that tied the game 5-5.

After allowing two runs in the top of the seventh, Veterans responded again, when it mattered most, in the bottom seventh. With a runner on, the Lady Hawks launched another two-run shot, this time to left-center, evening the score at 7-7 and forcing extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, Maddy Kinkaid came through as the hero with a single up the middle. The throw home was not in time, and Veterans walked it off with an 8-7 victory.

The Lady Hawks dropped Game 2, 13-7, to move to 16-2 on the season. They will face Houston County next Tuesday and Thursday.
