Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia to host 13th Annual Heart of the Dragon Boat Races
Betsy Fitzgerald, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia, said the event is a premier Southeast paddling competition.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia will host the 13th Annual Heart of the Dragon Boat Races on September 20 at Sandy Beach on Lake Tobesofkee in Macon.
The event brings together professional, club and local teams from across the Southeast to race in one of the region’s premier paddling competitions. Teams also fundraise to support Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs in Central Georgia.
“This year’s event has grown beyond Macon’s borders, attracting teams from across the Southeast who share our mission to support at-risk youth,” said Betsy Fitzgerald, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia.
Local teams are still welcome. Groups from businesses, churches, schools, gyms and Robins Air Force Base can register, with fees starting at $800. No experience is needed, as boats, paddles, life jackets, professional training and steerers are provided.
Team rosters can include up to 14 paddlers and one drummer for 10-person boats. Participants must be 14 or older. Dragon boating is popular among corporate teams, athletic groups and breast cancer survivor crews for its team-building and inclusive spirit.
