MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)  – A recent graduate of the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia’s Life Recovery program is now officially a car owner thanks to a donated vehicle from the wheels to work program.

Reco Wilson, who now works as a sales associate at the Rescue Mission’s thrift store, The Barn Center, spent more than a year on his recovery journey after relapsing in his ongoing battle with addiction. Wilson credits the Rescue Mission with providing him not only shelter but acceptance and love during this time.

“Very beaten down by life,” he said. “I was struggling with the choices that I had made that winded me back into another treatment facility, and I was just very depressed and very sad at the time. And they just loved me, you know, they loved me. They accepted me for who I was.”

Reco says several factors in his childhood created his addiction and led him to substance abuse as a means of escape, but he quickly realized that escape he craved only created chaos. Through counseling and faith, Wilson says he learned a valuable lesson:

“Know who you are and whose you are,” he said. “For me, I’m a great believer in Jesus Christ, working to be a grateful follower. When I walk in that, I’m able to do many and great things, just knowing my purpose is to be an instrument for God’s usage.”

With his new car keys in hand, he says transportation is no longer a hurdle. He hopes to find a job at a recovery center, but he says the car will be a tool that will better in his life in more ways than one.

“I can go to NA, AA meetings now and try different things to grow my network, because I know one way to help in addiction is connection,” he said. “The bigger my recovery network is, the bigger my chances to never pick up a drink or a drug again.”

Jason Beck, Vice President of Programs at the Rescue Mission, spoke about the organization’s mission.

“We want them to understand who they are in Christ, that their identity comes from Christ—not from what this world has to offer, not from what their past mistakes claim about them,” he said.

Many graduates of the Life Recovery Program struggle to find employment due to lack of transportation. The Rescue Mission encourages community members to consider donating vehicles to help graduates like Wilson.
