DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As student athletes gear up for another season of sports, Dublin High School is placing a strong emphasis on safety and well-being.

Head Football Coach Roger Holmes says it’s important to focus on three critical factors: hydration, a healthy diet, and plenty of rest.

“You can’t stay up till 12 or 1 in the morning playing with their phones or TikTok or video games and be able to perform at a high level the next day,” he said. He also says it is crucial that they eat a balanced diet rich in proteins and carbohydrates to fuel their energy needs.

Dawn Samson, the school nurse, has called on athletes to voice any concerns about their health, particularly regarding the possibility of concussions.

“Students struggle in academics after a concussion because they can’t think clearly,” she said. “So, it’s important that they rest their body and that they rest their brain for cognitive reasons. And, you know, listen to the student. If they don’t feel like they’re ready to come back or if they feel like they’re still foggy and having headaches because some of those concussions, the residual effects can last for months.”

Samson gave some tips on what to look out for when it comes to recognizing signs of injury, such as headaches, dizziness, and sensitivity to light, urging students to report any incidents that occur during practice.

Holmes says playing sports helps with growth after graduation.

“Sports is all part of that education,” he said. “And getting our young people ready on when they hit adulthood on their own time they show up at work and they understand how to operate in a team setting to make the whole thing successful.”

The softball team was set to play its first game Tuesday night. The football field is looking forward to its first game next week.
