MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – If you had weekend plans to visit the Ocmulgee River, you’ll need to adjust those plans.

Access to the Ocmulgee River at Amerson River Park is currently closed until further notice due to dangerously fast water conditions.  County officials at the Macon Bibb Fire Department and the Parks & Beautification Department are monitoring the water levels to assess when it will be safe to reopen the river.

Chief Shane Edwards addressed the situation, saying, “We know people want to be on the river, so we will be monitoring river levels hour by hour.”  He also highlighted the risks, “The river can be dangerous under normal circumstances, but it can be especially hazardous during high flow rates.”

While access to the Ocmulgee River at Amerson River Park (2551 Pierce Drive) is closed, the Spring Street boat ramp is open for fishing boats only.
