Houston County students head back to school Wednesday
“We are family. So we welcome them in and we are saying hello, we are giving them hugs... we always make them feel welcome.”

HOUSTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It was a cheerful morning at Miller Elementary School in Warner Robins, as students returned for their first day of school.
Teachers and staff greeted students at the door with smiles and hugs, setting the tone for what school leaders say will be a strong year of learning and growth.
“Miller is a family,” said Principal Dr. Dana Brock. “We care for our students, teachers and staff… It’s an environment full of learning and enriching opportunities.”
Teachers used the first day to help students get comfortable, meet their new classmates, and participate in fun activities while also easing into academics.
Jasmine Griffin, Miller’s Teacher of the Year, said the school community makes every student feel welcomed.
“We are family. So we welcome them in and we are saying hello, we are giving them hugs… we always make them feel welcome,” said Griffin.
Parents like Lakenya Brandon, expressed excitement and confidence about the new year.
“I shed just a few tears,” he said. “But just knowing that this is going to be an amazing year for our babies so I’m so excited.”
District leaders say they’re focused on a theme of unity this school year.
“This year our theme is ‘Together We Can,’” said Dr. Lazunia Frierson, Assistant Superintendent of District and School Effectiveness. “Our goal is that we all work together to support our students.”
The district also welcomed a new Superintendent, Dr. Richard Rogers, who they say will help lead the efforts toward improved literacy, math, and school culture.
