(NBC)-A tragic event unfolded aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas as the cruise ship sailed toward the Bahamas, resulting in the death of a crew member and serious injury to another.
The incidents occurred while the ship was en route to Miami, with videos shared by a passenger on TikTok showing rescue crews rushing to save a man who had gone overboard. Another clip captured the man being hoisted back onto the ship.
According to the Royal Bahamian Police, a 28-year-old South African female crew member was stabbed multiple times by a 35-year-old South African male crew member. The ship was near San Salvador Island when the assault happened. Following the stabbing, the male crew member fled and jumped into the water. He was later found unresponsive and pronounced dead by onboard medical staff. The female crew member received treatment for upper body stab wounds and is currently in stable condition.
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed the events in a statement Friday, noting that the onboard security team responded to a personal dispute between two crew members. The spokesperson said, “One of the crew members was injured, was attended to by the onboard medical team and she is now in stable condition. Unfortunately, the other crew member is deceased after he went overboard and was recovered in a search and rescue operation in a separate incident.”
Despite the incidents, the Icon of the Seas continues its journey on course. The investigation remains ongoing.
