Kennedy Center opera house could be named for Melania Trump
House committee approves amendment to rename theater after first lady

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBC NEWS)— The Kennedy Center’s Opera House may soon receive a new name.
On Tuesday, Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee voted to adopt an amendment to name the opera house after First Lady Melania Trump.
If passed, the performing arts center’s second-largest theater would become the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House.”
Lawmaker says move honors first lady’s support of the arts
Rep. Mike Simpson of Idaho sponsored the measure. He said he wanted to honor the first lady’s “support and commitment in promoting the arts and humanities.”
Theater currently has no namesake
The opera house is one of three main theaters at the Kennedy Center and is not currently named after anyone.
Melania Trump currently serves as the honorary chair of the board of trustees.
Measure moves to full House
The naming amendment will now go before the full House for a vote.
