GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man is dead after authorities say he intentionally set fire to a Jones County body shop before taking his own life Sunday morning.
Around 8:30 a.m., deputies with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office and crews from the Jones County Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Stan’s Body Shop on Gray Highway.
According to investigators, 58-year-old John Jackson, who had worked at the shop on and off over the years, poured diesel fuel on multiple vehicles inside the building and set them on fire. Jackson then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the office area of the business.
Officials say Jackson had a history of mental health struggles and alcohol abuse. At this time, there is no indication that he had any ongoing conflict with the business or its staff.
The fire was quickly brought under control, and no one else was injured in the incident.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities ask the community to keep everyone affected in their thoughts during this difficult time.
