Death of Sparta man under investigation after body found in woods

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the GBI in investigating the death of 63-year-old John Wesley Thomas of Sparta, the agency said in a news release.

SPARTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A man was found dead in the woods Friday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the GBI in investigating the death of 63-year-old John Wesley Thomas of Sparta, the agency said in a news release.

Thomas’s body was found May 23 in the woods near the 300 block of Guill Cemetery Road in Hancock County. A GBI medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
