Macon, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County officials demolished a vacant, blighted building in downtown Macon on Wednesday morning as part of an ongoing effort to address deteriorating properties in the area.
The building, formerly known as Norfolk Southern, was located at 223 Walnut Street. Mayor Lester Miller explained that the demolition is aimed at improving the neighborhood around Carolyn Crayton Park.
Mayor Miller said one of the main goals is to create space for two parking lots, which will make it easier for people to access Carolyn Crayton Park, especially during the Cherry Blossom Festival season.
In addition to creating more parking, the city plans to repave Walnut Street to help alleviate flooding in the area.
Details regarding the project’s bids and completion timeline have not yet been announced.
