Mercer Wins First Ever SOCON Championship
The Mercer Bears (10-2, 7-1) have won the Southern Conference Championship with a 49-23 victory over Furman Saturday at Five Star Stadium

MACON, Georgia – (WMGT) – The Mercer Bears have won the first ever Southern Conference Championship in football program history with a 49-23 win over Furman. It’s the first conference title for Mercer since the 1933 Dixie Title.
The Bears will go dancing now, as Mercer earns the seventh seed in the NCAA FCS Playoff Bracket. That comes with a bye week for the first round this week, but the Bears will be in playoff action for back-to-back seasons to take on the winner of Rhode Island and Central Connecticut State, at Five Star Stadium December 7th at 2 p.m.
Here’s what Coach Jacobs had to say after the game Saturday.
“Yeah, how about those bears, right?” said Coach Jacobs. “An incredibly emotional day. Just super proud and happy for our kids.”
Jacobs went on to say, “January 19th when we got here, we started this journey, we set some pretty lofty goals, and the first goal in the program each and every year is to win the Southern Conference. The level of buy-in, commitment, the hard work, the perseverance, and I think what’s great about it is, this road hasn’t been easy. We’ve won some really tough football games, but to see our kids put it together today, and to really leave no doubt to win the first SOCON Championship in school history. To win the second championship in 95 plus years, is just a really special thing to be apart of. To be the one to get us to 10 wins. To be the one to be apart of this with these players and our staff, who I cant say enough of, because they do a lot of the work, and we’re just blessed to be here. Blessed to be champions, and I couldn’t be more proud to be their coach today.”
