Mercer University Football prepares for Princeton
The Mercer Bears prepare for their first ever matchup against Princeton University, while ranking this 2024 Bears team among all-time Mercer teams in the program

MACON, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – The Mercer University Bears football team just came off a bye week. They now prepare to face the Ivy League Princeton University for the first time ever in program history.
This Bears team is undefeated at 5-0 and is off to the best start in program history. It’s also the highest ranked Mercer team ever. Head Coach Mike Jacobs explains what that means to him leading this squad in his first season. “It’s great that people are talking about Mercer football nationally and that were garnering that recognition” said Coach Jacobs. “That this is a really good football team and although it may have only been back for eleven years, we are more than capable to beat anyone on the national level, and doing it consistently, so I’m excited about that.”
Macon native and Sophomore Wide Receiver Brayden Smith agreed with Coach. “I hate to be bias, but I would put us at one” said Smith. “First 5-0 start ever and it’s just our connection, our bond between our team with us in a new coaching staff, and not skipping a beat, just keeping it rolling.”
Redshirt Senior Linebacker Ken Standley is all about accountability leading to success. “We have a lot of comradery, a lot of togetherness” said Standley Monday. “There’s a lot of guys out there playing for each other. Not so much selfishness. Each team has selfishness that I’ve been a part of, this has probably been the least selfish team I’ve been a part of, and I think that’s a testament to our success. Togetherness no matter the outcome. Not pointing the finger, that’s the biggest thing. Just accepting the task, or the challenge at hand and attacking it really.”
Bears kickoff against the Tigers is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Five Star Stadium.
