Georgia College Students Commemorate Sept. 11th Anniversary

Students at Georgia College and State University, held a moment of silence early Monday morning across the campus.

They also took time to sign a large cloth sheet, as a way to pen their thoughts about what they remember from 10 years ago.

“It’s something that never needs to be forgotten,” GCSU senior Jenna Peachtross says.

Jenna wrote ‘U.S.A. ‘Merica the Beautiful’. She says writing that on a giant cloth is a way to remember how the country came together in response.

“Everybody loves American pride. And that’s what you think of when you think of 9-11. Everybody coming together.”

More kids were sitting at tables in the outdoor courtyard on campus, creating cards for soldiers and the men and women in uniform. The cards and notes will go to people the students do not know, something Jessica Ramirez says, makes them that much better.

“There’s people that don’t even know them personally, on a personal level, but they’re still seeing these cards from people that they don’t know, and we appreciate what they’re doing. I think that brings a lot of significance to it,” Ramirez says.

Freshman Justin Harris was only in third grade 10 years ago. He is making a card that just says, ‘Thank You’, on the front cover.

“It’s the thought that counts. It’s motivation…appreciation of what they’re doing,” Harris says.

The giant cloth sheet covered with signatures and messages of support, has yet to find a final place for showcase. Students who helped organize the event, say they hope to hang it somewhere in the city of Milledgeville where people can see it every day.
