Meet Fort Valley’s Hometown Hero

We wrapped up our 2011 Middle Georgia Pride Series by introducing you to Fort Valley’s hometown hero. People who know her say she always has a smile on her face and she has a contagious personality. Miss Jo is the mayors secretary, but is even more well-known for being the Peach County football teams leading lady.

“Well Jo is Miss Peach County football. Jo does everything to make this team go,” said Dr. Gene Waites, team Chaplin.

“Miss Jo is known all over the county for being Miss Trojan and Miss Trojan Touchdown Club, anything we need she’s always there,” said Coach Chad Campbell, Peach County football.

President of the Touchdown Club Jo Cobb is kind of like the teams secret weapon.

“She just makes it happen. Whatever you need you just go to Jo because you know you’ll get it,” explained Waites.

Whether she’s selling Trojan paraphernalia, raising money for the team, baking cookies for the coaches and players, or preparing pre-game meals, it’s all on her own time. Coach Campbell even calls her a member of the team.

“You can’t beat miss Jo. I mean she’s been this figure head here for a long time. She’s always taking care of the kids and the coaches, like you said, she’s part of the family here and she’s I’ve known her for a long time and I can’t imagine doing it without her,” explained Coach Campbell.

Jo’s dedication to the club began on the field and in the stands, but it’s what happened beyond the game that kept her coming back for nearly 30 years.

“Because you see so many of these young men that if it were not for football they would not get a college education. They couldn’t afford it otherwise. They’re our future leaders and everything that we can invest in them to make them better men and it’s what we need to do,” explained Jo Cobb, Touchdown Club.

At least for now, that secret weapon is here to stay.

“Well I say every year I’m not gonna do this again and then the time gets here and you just have to do it,” said Cobb.
