MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – About 200 middle school students in Bibb County attended the Flight Summer Camp Career Fest on Thursday.

Guest mentors, representing 36 different careers, spoke with students at Peter G. Appling Middle School.

The students learned about how the mentors got into their fields, obstacles they faced along the way and more.

Dominique Nichols, the principal of the summer school program at Appling, says the career fest was catered to the interests of each student.

“In the second week of summer camp, we invited students to tell us what they want to be when they grow up,” Nichols said. “Instead of saying, ‘This is who we have,’ and, ‘Here’s who you’re going to talk to,’ we said ‘Who do you want?’ And then from there we just pounded the pavement. Teachers, staff members, community members reached out and started connecting people with this opportunity to be able to get in front of students and have someone to talk to and have someone to engage with.”
