Macon hair salon help local veterans with hair loss
Charlyn Harris-Allen helps vets acquire medical wigs and hairpieces through their VA Benefits.

Charlyn Harris-Allen is the owner of The Beauty Parlor Salon and Boutique on Napier Avenue in Macon. She’s also a Certified Hair Loss Specialist who can help veteran dealing with scalp conditions and different types of hair loss like Alopecia.
Harris-Allen helps them acquire medical wigs and hairpieces through their VA Benefits. Disabled Army Veteran, Vontressa Salaam, is in the process of getting one now.
“I didn’t know anything about it and it feels like its just a gift from God, honestly. To be able to have a service for veterans with hair loss, I mean, I couldn’t ask for anything more,” said Vontressa Salaam, a Veteran who will soon receive her a unit.
Salaam says she noticed some hair loss and thought over time it would grow back. But, when it didn’t, Harris-Allen wanted to help.
“I enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces when they leave. I love helping people I love building confident, self-esteem. Hair loss is a very, very sensitive subject and you really have to be compassionate towards your clients because most of them are suffering in silence inside,” said the salon owner, Charlyn Harris-Allen.
To help veterans choose the right unit for themselves, Harris-Allen will take them through a process.
“When the veteran comes in to see me, they will come in for a consultation, during this consultation, I will take measurements, I will do a through hair and scalp analysis. They will have catalogs that they can go through to choose their styles. They will have a display of units and a display of different hair samples so that they can feel the textures and see different colors for their units,” said the salon owner.
Salaam, who will be getting her wig in the near future, and says she’s grateful for this benefit.
“It makes me feel like they are honoring what they told us when we went in, that once you serve your country honorably and you’re discharged, Uncle Sam will take care of you. That’s what they told all of us, so this feels like Uncle Sam is taking care of us,” said Salaam.
