D1 Training discusses stretches to help manage stress

April is National Stress Awareness Month.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – April is National Stress Awareness Month and D1 Training in Macon says that daily stretching can be beneficial.

Lydia Huthmaker, Assistant General Manager at D1 Training Macon, says that 5 minutes of daily stretching can help reduce stress.

D1 Training says there are many benefits of stretching:

  • Eases stress: When muscles tighten up in response to stress, it’s important to stretch to loosen up those muscles before any physical harm is done. Most people carry their stress on their shoulders, lower back and their neck. Stretches to ease stress pain in those areas are neck tilts, rotational stretches and childs pose.
  • Focuses awareness to the present: The majority of stress, anxiety and even depression stem from fear of the unknown from focusing on things in the future and out of one’s control. Taking a few moments to refocus on yourself can calm the mind back to the present allowing you to focus on what’s in front of you and in your control.
  • Increases blood flow to muscles and brain: Similar to cardio workouts, stretching increases the blood flow to your brain. More blood flow contributes to a clearer mind and more cheerful mood.
  • Improved sleep: Stretching can help your quality of sleep by reducing sleep-disrupting cramps caused by tightness and pain.
