MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The GeorgiaFIRST Robotics Peachtree District Championship began Thursday at Mercer University. It continues Friday and Saturday inside Hawkins Arena.

The championship is a competition between high school robotics teams across Georgia and South Carolina, and some of our local teams have joined the action.

Houston County’s competitive robotics team, Team #3635 – Flying Legion, consists of students from all five high schools in the county, and Built4Bibb Team 9260 has joined as well.

We spoke with Connie Haynes, the CEO of GeorgiaFIRST Robotics, about the event.

“These are all robots built by high schools students,” Haynes said. ‘They are about 120 pounds in size, but they are fabricated, they are programmed, they are driven, all things on the technical side and non-technical side go into building a robot and robotics team through FIRST.”

The event continues Friday until 7 p.m. The robots will be in action again on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
