EMA urges people to prepare for severe weather

Community members are encouraged to post their #SafePlaceSelfie on Wednesday, April 3.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Severe weather is headed for Middle Georgia and people are encouraged to locate safe places in their living spaces.

Spencer Hawkins, Director of Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency, says to find a safe place in your home ahead of severe weather . Hawkins says to stay away from windows or exterior walls. Good places to stay during severe weather are in interior closets or bathrooms.

Hawkins says to have an emergency kit with bottled water, non-perishable foods, flashlights with batteries, cell phone chargers, and extra batteries in case the power goes out.

April 3 is #SafePlaceSelfie day which is to help prepare the community when severe weather strikes. According to EMA, a Safe Place Selfie is a photo of your safe location that you will go to when severe weather threatens and emergency management directs you to shelter in place. The photo doesn’t have to be an actual selfie, it can be a pet, an image of the location, or some other creative way to shows you and your family know where to go to shelter in place.
