Bibb Commission Wants Less Litter at Lake Tobesofkee
Today, Bibb County Commissioners considered prohibiting people from lighting up at the beaches with a goal of cutting back on littering.
“It’s going to deal with not just not smoking but littering on the lake and trying to keep the beaches nice.”
Bibb County Commissioner Joe Allen says smoking at the beach causes cigarette butts to be left on the ground.
Head Park Ranger Doug Furney says, “The commissioners have directed us the rangers to be more observant of people smoking and see what kind of problems smoking might cause and to come back to them and give our recommendations on what they should do to make it a little better for all the people.”
Sherry Fountain doesn’t like the litter, but doesn’t feel people shouldn’t be able to smoke.
“I don’t think they should do it, I personally smoke and I know it’s not good for you but people come out here to relax…”
The park currently has signs promoting no littering, but commissioners want stricter guidelines.
“Whether you live in Bibb County or not we have a lot of people outside of Bibb County, you want your beaches to look nice, you want them clean for your children. You want it to be nice for your kids when you take them out to Tobesofkee,” said Allen.
The motion that passed today says that the park will need to have better signage saying something along the lines of: “please help keep our beaches clean, no littering.”
