Bike Walk Macon releases 2023 impact report
One topic that stood out in the report was the 'Play Streets Macon' initiative.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bike Walk Macon released its 2023 impact report, highlighting its efforts to promote safe and accessible transportation options in the community.
One topic that stood out in the report was the ‘Play Streets Macon’ initiative. It’s program that transforms neighborhood streets into safe and fun spaces for residents to bike and walk. The initiative typically runs for three to five hours during the weekend.
Thanks to a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Bike Walk Macon has been able to continue offering bicycle and pedestrian classes and resources to adults, youth, and law enforcement.
“They have conducted educational workshops with youth in nine recreation centers and partnered with the senior center to offer education on how to safely bike and walk,” said Rachel Umana, Bike Walk Macon Executive Director.
The organization has also partnered with Macon-Bibb County to establish a Complete Streets Compliance Committee that regularly meets. It even hired a dedicated traffic safety manager to ensure roads are designed and funded with safety in mind.
According to Bike Walk Macon, its focus this year is on the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail. The organization says it hopes to find ways to support the trail, increase awareness of it, and encourage its expansion.
