Paralyzed Houston County Graduate Soars Academically

After suffering from a serious spinal injury, Houston County High School senior Alex Adcock became a quadriplegic.

“I broke my neck on my trampoline outback, I was doing a double front flip and on the second revolution, my head hit the mat and my body kept going.”

August 13th 2006 is a day Alex will never forget, yet he doesn’t let his disabilities impact his strengths.

A four year honor student with a perfect math score on the Georgia High School Graduation test, he was also accepted into Mercer University.

“Right now it’s a 3.97, not a 4, I wish it was a 4 but darn that 9th grade class.”

Even with plans to look forward to after high school, Alex says saying goodbye to these last four years will be tough.

“All my friends at school I’m not going to see any of them and I have nothing to do this summer so I’ll just be at home probably.”

Driving is the one thing Alex wishes he could do, but he occupies his time as being a self-proclaimed TV junkie, a bit of a video gamer and keeps a serious collection of skulls.

“I’ve never been sad or depressed about being paralyzed, I don’t know why I just never have.”

After the accident, Alex spent two months in a medically induced coma,
followed by two months of rehab in Atlanta.

In addition to his academic achievements, Alex also received the Georgia Certificate of Merit. He will major in Engineering starting this fall.
