Bibb County High School Girls Learn Car Mechanics

It’s called the ‘Girls Auto Know Camp’, and the point is to teach young girls about a field of work they might not otherwise consider.

Changing tires, oil, and jump starting a car are some of the basics the girls will learn over the next three days at the Hutchings Career Center in Macon.

Mary Beth Barnes is the Non-Traditional Student Coordinator for Bibb County schools. It’s her job to look for new ways to teach kids, and to do it in a unique way.

“There are so many opportunitites available for girls for jobs, if they just have a little bit of experience and a little bit of knowledge,” Barnes says.

For most girls, this was the first time they have had to change a car tire. They say this is a great way to learn about their car, but also to gain a sense of independence.

Barnes also teaches courses to girls about construction. Later this year, a class is planned to teach young men about nursing and the healthcare field.
