Perry High Senior Battles Cancer to Graduate
Kody Lucas never thought he’d see the day he walked across the stage at graduation.
Anaplastic astrocytoma is the brain tumor Kody has battled since 2007. Nearly four years later, he plans to join the rest of his graduating class
even after he was told he’d never make it this far.
“It’s kind of like an I told you it would happen moment, but it’s not the happiest of times either.”
Unfortunately, a recent checkup showed that the cancer may be back.
“Three weeks ago we got the word that the tumor may be back and it may have already spread so we don’t know what we’re facing,” said Kody’s dad Bobby.
In light of his recent prognosis, Kody is still full of life and ready to face whatever may come his way.
“Here I am getting ready for what I was told I would never see.”
At just 18 years-old Kody has done what a lot of people could never do. He fought the odds, even when he didn’t want to. When others may have lost hope, he never did.
“No matter who says that it won’t happen and no matter what happens, never ever give up – just reach for the stars, never give up hope.”
Kody loves to play the saxophone. He plans to major in music and minor in music therapy. Kody says one day, he wants to be the music therapist at St. Jude’s Hospital.
